چکیده

This paper investigates the grinding performance of epoxy matrix composites reinforced by unidirectional carbon fibres, using an alumina grinding wheel. Emphasis was placed on understanding the effect of fibre orientations and grinding depths on the grinding force and surface integrity, and on understanding the grinding mechanisms, with a comparison to orthogonal cutting. It was found that greater grinding forces occurred at a fibre orientation between 60◦ and 90◦, but poorer grinding surface finish took place between 120◦ and 180◦. The surface integrity was highly dependent on the fibre orientation and the depth of grinding, which is very similar to the results of orthogonal cutting. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A study on the grindability of multidirectional carbon fibre-reinforced plastics

This work studied the grindability of the multidirectional carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites with the panel layup of [(0◦/90◦/45◦/−45◦)3]s. Focuses were on the chip formation, material removal mechanism, ground surface features and grinding force characteristics. The results were systematically compared with the unidirectional CFRP composites. It was found that the grinding forc...

Characterisation of the mechanical and fracture properties of a uni-weave carbon fibre/epoxy non-crimp fabric composite

A complete database of the mechanical properties of an epoxy polymer reinforced with uni-weave carbon fibre non-crimp fabric (NCF) is established. In-plane and through-the-thickness tests were performed on unidirectional laminates under normal loading and shear loading. The response under cyclic shear loading was also measured. The material has been characterised in terms of stiffness, strength...

3D FEA Modelling of Laminated Composites in Bending and Their Failure Mechanisms

This paper developed three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to investigate the effect of fibre lay-up on the initiation of failure of laminated composites in bending. TsaiHill failure criterion was applied to identify the critical areas of failure in composite laminates. In accordance with the 3D FEA, unidirectional ([0]16), cross-ply ([0/90]4s) and angle-ply ([±45]4s) laminates m...

Tensile and Flexural Properties of Single Carbon Fibres

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)and pitch-based carbon fibres are widely used as a reinforcement in composite materials such as carbon fibre reinforced plastics, carbon fibre reinforced ceramics, carbon-carbon composites and carbon fibre reinforced metals, because of their high specific strength and modulus. Such composites have become a dominant material in the aerospace, automotive and sporting goods ...

C.P. No. 1347 PROCUREMENT EXECUTIVE, MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

SUMMARY Theoretical analyses are made of the influence of the following features on the longitudinal shear and transverse tensile moduli of unidirectional fibre reinforced composites: (i) random variations in positioning of individual fibres, (ii) overall variations leading to fibre bunching, (iii) overall variations leading to interspersed matrix layers, (iv) localised variations resulting in ...
